Key areas of responsibility
- Committed to and endorsing the highest levels of customer service, merchandising and
product knowledge – with a specific focus on wine & wine sales
- Managing wine tastings, including; in shop, public events, private events and wine dinners.
- Continually focus on driving sales to ensure that our Shops makes a significant financial
contribution to Rothschild Waddesdon Ltd
- Ensure the Wine, Gift and Temporary Shops are staffed appropriately
- Ensure the Wine, Gift, Woodland Toy and Temporary Shops are presented to the highest
standards
- Manage the Wine, Gift and Temporary Shops in the Retail and Buying Manager’s absence
The Assistant Manager’s success will be monitored through:
- Weekly departmental meetings
- Annual Personal Development meeting with the Retail and Buying Manager
- NT Visitor Enjoyment scores and social media as a means of monitoring Customer
Satisfaction
The key areas of responsibility and duties of the Assistant Manager are as follows:
Finance
- Ensure all monies and transactions on the Shop floors are in accordance with Accounts, PCI
Compliance standards and money laundering due diligence.
- Ensure that all financial procedures are executed according to company policy; including end
of day cash reconciliation, maintenance of floats and cash bulk & pay roll
- Responsible for high value sales and stock, such as the personal selling of Grand Vin wines
- Informing the Retail and Buying Manager and/or RWL Administrator of areas of concern with
low or high stock holdings
- Ensure that stock takes are undertaken on time and accurately, working with the RWL
Administrator and Stock Room volunteers to ensure the stock is well managed
- Minimise wastage of perishable stock by; maintaining the best before database, carrying out
reductions and promotions where necessary and ensuring stock rotation is carried out by the
whole team.
Business
- Work with the management team in creatively maximising all Shop assets
- Organise and deliver wine events to public and private groups
- Manage tastings on the shop floor, working with Retail staff and volunteers
- Initiate and recognise opportunities to sell to high spending visitors and groups
- Manage and execute efficient and accurate pricing/ processing of stock deliveries
- Ensure Stock rooms are kept well organised, tidy and safe in accordance with Health and
Safety Regulations, whilst keeping a strong knowledge of current products
- Plan and adapt the staff rota to ensure areas are staffed to an appropriate level
- Work with software providers, and support services within the National Trust and Waddesdon
to ensure business continuity through seamless provision of financial information systems

Merchandising
- Assist the Retail and Buying Manager to ensure sales are maximised by effective visual
merchandising on the Shop floors
- Work with the management team and lead retail staff to ensure the Shops maintain a high
standard of housekeeping and appropriate stock levels in accordance with KPIs
Team Management and Development
- Assist in the training and management of Retail staff to enable them to meet the high
standards required by the organisation
- Develop a customer-focused commitment amongst all Retail staff with a particular focus on
product knowledge and knowledge of Rothschild wines; through in-shop tastings, training
plans and ad-hoc briefings.
- Motivate all Retail staff to create efficient, flexible and happy working environment, fostering
individual commitment, enthusiasm and confidence
Health and Safety / HACCP
- Ensure that staff observe all Health and Safety Regulations in accordance with statutory
obligations and under instruction from Waddesdon Health and Safety Manager.
- Ensure the correct initial completion and subsequent updating of the necessary Risk
Assessments & E-Learning.
- Manage the best before database to ensure all perishable stock sold within the correct time
frame.
Other ad hoc duties may be required as necessary.
Person specification Essential:
- Sustained successful supervisory career in hospitality or retail
- A passion for wine and knowledge of styles, varieties, growing areas etc.
- Experience or background in wine service and/or tastings
- Willingness to complete wine qualifications (WSETs) and to learn about the Rothschild Family’s
international Wine Portfolios
- Ability to inspire and motivate staff
- Confident people skills and ease with public speaking
- Strong IT, analytical and numerical skills with the ability to interpret statistics
- Excellent business, planning and organisational skills
- Track record of increasing sales
- Track record of strong visual merchandising skills
Person Specification Desirable:
- High visual standards, personal sense of style, creative flair
- Empathy with the Waddesdon customer profile
- Experience within a historic venue or cultural organisation
- Awareness of current market trends in retail
Terms & Conditions:
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £26,000
Hours: Wednesday to Sunday. A minimum of 37.5 hours per week, to include bank
holidays and occasional evenings as required by the business.
Annual Leave: From start date: 33 days (including public holidays)
After three full years of service: 36 days (including public holidays)
After five full years of service: 38 days (including bank holidays)
After ten full years of service: 40 days (including bank holidays)
