Wine Trainee (Wine Jobs: Wine Retail & Sommelier)

Stone, Vine & Sun of Winchester – a multi-award-winning independent – is seeking to employ someone keen to work in the wine trade to work in their office / shop / warehouse. The role offers plenty of potential for development. Duties and required skills are as follows. (Elements in italics relevant but temporarily suspended due to Covid)

In the Office

  • Becoming familiar and comfortable with SAGE small business software
  • Taking, invoicing & processing customer orders by phone or from the website
  • Working with a courier company: producing labels, checking deliveries & liaising with customers
  • Photographing wines for, loading wines to and editing the website

In the Warehouse

  • Learning and knowing the location of about 600 lines of stock
  • Picking and packing wine for collection by courier or delivery by SVS
  • Breaking down stacked wine on pallets for ease of picking

In the Shop

  • Keeping the shop well-stocked, and accurately priced and labelled

Deliveries

  • Depending on age and experience: occasionally undertaking deliveries in the van in the Hampshire area

Tastings

  • Assisting SVS in holding customer tastings in the office and other venues

Opportunity to develop wine knowledge

  • Being supported in taking WSET exams
  • Learning from three experienced colleagues
  • Participating in tastings of samples in the office and customer tastings

Skills required

  • Enthusiasm for wine
  • Some experience in the wine trade or the on-trade preferable but not essential
  • Well-organised and disciplined: vital to have attention to detail
  • Inter-personal skills for engaging with customers
  • Basic IT skills: Microsoft Office Word & Excel if possible
  • Ability (and willingness) to physically move lots of wine as and when required
  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays and evenings
  • Driving license

 

Hours: 9.00-6.00 weekly, plus occasional Saturdays (9.30-4.00pm), and evening work at tastings. (Saturday work gains a day off in lieu). Salary band £20-24K, commensurate with experience – but we do emphasise this is a junior role.
