Chivas Brothers Packaging Development Team, based in Dumbarton, are seeking Packaging Technologists to join their team. The purpose of this role is to specify, develop and deliver new packaging components to meet approved Marketing / Business concepts, to the agreed quality timings and costs. Ensure new products meet the agreed Business Quality and Manufacturing performance standards.  Ensure that new components and products are fit for purpose, through relevant testing and trialing in line with PD Business process

In your role as a Packaging Technologist, you will be an integral part of a team reporting to a Project Manager, with some of your key responsibilities listed below: 
  • Develop new packaging components that meet the Marketing design brief in terms of functionality cost, and timings in line with the PD Business process.
  • Support concept design with technical solutions based on supplier capability and material knowledge.
  • Mitigate risk on component developments which are identified within the PD Risk Management Process.
  • Manage all component developments to ensure key deliverables are met including completing relevant testing and trialing procedures and processes, ensuring that packaging meets Food Safety, Quality and Manufacturing Standards.
  • Develop and maintain technical & functional specifications for all new developments ensuring that specification systems are updated in line with PD Business process.
  • Support technical relationships with suppliers to deliver new designs, technological developments, and all component qualifications including color and reprographic requirements.
  • Follow material product integrity process for glass, closure and cork.
  • Maintain library for colour standards and quality limit samples for new components ensuring standards are recorded and issued to relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure new packaging components are compatible with Chivas (PR) Supply Chain, Quality, Environmental, Legal, Food Safety and CSR policy.
  • Be aware of Intellectual Property rights and confidentiality agreements in relation to component development.
  • Manage component development to ensure compliance with ISO9001:2008, ISO22000:2005, CBL Quality Management System and Material General Specifications in respect to design and development activities. 

Our ideal Packaging Technologist will have/be: 

  • 3 years relevant experience in Technical or Design role.
  • Educated to Degree Standard, ideally in Product Design, Science or Engineering discipline.
  • Experience and knowledge of packaging materials, including manufacturing processes, design, reprographics and development.
  • Experience of managing component development in a competitive environment to agreed timelines.
  • Experience and understanding of measurement techniques and ability to develop functional specifications on packaging components & materials.
  • Ability to review and interpret statistical data including technical drawings with an understanding of tolerances.
  • Experience of material & component testing using laboratory measurement and testing equipment.
  • Desirable to have membership and qualifications from the Institute of Packaging.
  • A proven team player with ability to communicate across all levels of the business and proficiency in building strong working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Fluent PC skills including excel, power point & word.
  • Ability to travel worldwide to support component development.
  • Full driving license.
