Established in 2001, Taurus Wines is an award-winning independent wine merchant based in a recently renovated 2,500 sq ft barn in the Surrey Hills. Turning over c£1.8m a year, we are the leading independent wine merchant in this affluent home counties area.
The role
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Store Manager will be expected to motivate, nurture and organise an experienced team of four full and part-time staff members whilst working alongside the Tasting & Events/Marketing Manager. The Store Manager is our main front of house contact, as a result they need to be confident, neatly presented, and have great people skills, remaining enthusiastic and positive at all times with an infectious passion for all wine – be it better-value drinks for weddings and parties or fine wine for collectors and connoisseurs. The Store Manager will also be required to keep abreast of all the administrative elements of running a busy store too, such as stock management and ordering.
As with all independent wine shops, the Store Manager must be willing to help in all aspects of the store and have a positive can-do attitude – although the role will mostly be customer-facing on the shop floor, some days you might have to jump in a van to help the drivers or help couples plan their wedding wines. Humping wine boxes around is pretty much a given too!
The Store Manager will need to work weekends on a shift basis with occasional evenings for tastings and events. We work on a 5 day/45 hour week rota on a 5 day in 7 basis, mainly between 9am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday. This will include 60 weekend shifts (i.e. 30 weekends) a year.

The ideal candidate will:
Have significant experience leading a high-volume, high-quality wine store with extensive front of house experience and preferably some experience of selling wine for weddings and events.
Be WSET qualified, preferably to diploma level, though candidates with on-the-job experience are welcome to apply.
Be computer literate in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
Understand the basic principles of retail and be able to organise their time, putting customers as their priority during the working day.
Be able to keep the store clean, safe and looking great at all times.
Ideally have a full clean driving licence.
Have excellent visual merchandising skills.
Be reliable and an excellent timekeeper, and also an exceptionally good communicator with top-notch interpersonal skills. Reading the room, and the customer, is an important skill.
Be physically fit: cases of wine are heavy!
Salary: £28k to £30k depending on experience, with additional monthly target-meeting bonus.
