Simpsons Wine Estate is seeking an experience Assistant Vineyard Manager to join its dedicted team. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a vineyard focused on high quality grape growing in the UK wine sector.
The Role:
Working with and reporting to the Vineyad Manager, you will be involved in all aspects of the viticultural programme. Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Vineyard Operations: All canopy management operations, including pruning, shoot removal, shoot and bunch selection, picking, planting. Repair and maintenance of vineyard trellis.
- Vineyard Tractor Operations: Mowing, leaf trimming, leaf removal, spreading, cultivation, inter cep work, plant protection.
- Site Maintenance: Participating in the upkeep of the site, including headlands, borders, gates, windbreak management, and working with flowers/plants in eco-friendly zones.
- Supervising Vineyard Teams: Overseeing the progress and quality of work performed, ensuring health and safety standards and being met, forecasting the number of vineyard workers required for tasks.
- Data Collection & Analysis: Soil sampling, vine nutrient, yield prediction, time and motion.
- Working with the Viticulturist: Overseeing recommendations and ensuring quality of vineyard management, meeting targets set, reviewing spray and fertilizer programmes, ensuring projects are completed within the determined timeframe, budget and to the correct specification. Implementing and meeting sustainability targets and requirements.
- Other: Help during Wine Production operations, e.g. bottling, disgorgement, labelling.
The Candidate:
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience managing, or working in, a vineyard.
- Sound viticultural knowledge and an understanding of grape growing in the UK.
- The desire and skills to improve vineyard technique and philosophy, as well as a passion to product world-class sustainable grown wine grapes.
- A mechanical aptitude.
- Strong business and commerical acumen and analytic capabilities.
- Competency in MS Office software packages and app based management and data collection software.
Also Required:
- A full UK driving license and own transport.
- Ability to operate a modern fleet of viticultural equipment and machinery - forklift an PA1-PA2-PA3 licence advantageous.
- Proficiency certificates (or the ability to acquire) and experience with spraying operations.
Please note that weekend, evening and early morning work will be required - e.g. the frost season in Spring, harvest in the Autumn, and spraying during the growing season.
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
