Joining us as a Wine Maker Technologist is a fantastic opportunity to help drive the product quality and innovation credentials that M&S is famous for.

This role will support a range of activities across the drink's category, working hand in hand with existing category technologists in soft drinks, juice, beers, wines and spirits as needed. We are currently undergoing a programme of transformation within the category, which means there is a high level of supplier onboarding, product upgrade and NPD. This role will support the category in delivering our high-reaching growth plans whilst maintaining the highest safety, quality and governance standards.

As part of this role, you will have a direct impact on the quality, innovation, food safety, integrity, ethical and sustainability credentials of our products, through your work on supporting the step change and work with passionate colleagues to continuously learn and step change our product ranges.

Using your technical knowledge, expertise and judgement you'll ensure the consistent delivery of innovative, high quality, safe, and legal products, which meet our M&S brand values, ensuring categories deliver their sales and profit targets. You'll be accountable for key technical workstreams as required within the drinks team to aid your colleagues to deliver category business unit objectives.

Ideal candidate:

  • Have prior experience in the drinks industry with specific wine knowledge being highly advantageous.
  • Be able to demonstrate technical and quality management of a drinks category (alcoholic/ non-alcoholic)
  • Have a solid understanding of the M&S product development process and associated systems (i.e Find, Connect, GA etc.)
  • Be a real self-starter and have the curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Be a great communicator and standout colleague working alongside our senior food technologists, supplier partners and service providers
  • Have strong analytical skills and attention to details
  • Be very organised and able to handle a high administrative agenda

No two days are the same!

Key responsibilities include: Category & Supply Base

  • Working with our suppliers and senior technologists to ensure product information flows are tightly managed and owned to ensure M&S products are made safely and to agreed standards.
  • Sourcing & developing suppliers to deliver the strategic business unit needs in juice and soft drinks as advised by senior technologists

New Product Development (NPD) & Innovation

  • Ensuring the product attribute lists (PAL) are completed and correct at all times
  • Ensuring specifications are completed on time using the agreed approval pathway
  • Ensuring quality contracts signed off by relevant parties prior to launch
  • Ensuring artworks are signed off withing the agreed timeframes
  • Ensuring online product changes are registered and actioned accordingly
  • Ensuring relevant documentation is submitted should product fast tracks be required

Quality

  • Ensuring any serious complaints are investigated and adequate actions implemented to eliminate future reoccurrences.
  • Ensuring product quality is continually monitored and maintained through product sampling and store visits.

Governance

  • Ensuring supplier audits are closed out within the required timeframes and that any issues are escalated to the relevant category technologist.
  • Ensuring any independent product testing (micro, pesticides, nutritional etc.) is actioned and closed out in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring any independent labelling challenges are review and actioned

People

  • Bringing personal energy and drive to recognise the importance of pan-team contribution on operations as critical; on specification, labels and NPD delivery.
  • Having the ability to build relationship with specialist winemaker technologists and crafting the conditions for success around our transformation plans.

To be successful in role you will have a degree level technical qualification in an appropriate subject alongside industry experience of drinks within the food sector. Where appropriate you'll hold an externally recognised professional competence (e.g., FIFST, MIFST or WSET).
