About the Institute of Masters of Wine
The Institute of Masters of Wine is dedicated to promoting excellence in the wine trade.
'Master of Wine' is both a qualification and a title, usually abbreviated to 'MW' following a Member's name. Anybody who uses these letters has passed the rigorous Master of Wine Examination that tests both practical and theoretical understanding of the wines of the world.
The Institute works to build a community of individual Masters of Wine as they strive for excellence in their wine-related activities, and seeks to attract new Members of the highest calibre from across the global wine community.
The Institute’s purpose is to promote excellence, interaction and learning across all sectors of the global wine community. It has 342 Members around the world, working as winemakers, viticulturists, importers, buyers, retailers, journalists, educators, sommeliers and senior executives. The Institute runs study programmes and events around the world, and conducts examinations in London, North America and Australia each year. It relies heavily on Members who volunteer to organise and carry out many of its activities.
The Institute is based in Fitzroy Square, W1, but will move to Vauxhall at the end of 2016. It has a core staff of eight, with additional staff located in North America and Australia.
