Based in Hackney, The Modest Merchant is a young and fast-growing wine importer, wholesaler and retailer with a clear sense of purpose: To champion modern, low-intervention wines from some of Europe’s most exciting small producers.
We work directly with the growers, building genuine relationships and bringing characterful, expressive wines to both the on and off trade. As the business continues to expand, we’re shaping the foundations for what comes next and looking for someone who wants to be part of that journey.
Now, eight years in, we’re hiring for an exciting role in Trade Sales & Business Development.
The Opportunity
As we continue to grow our wine portfolio and client base, we are looking for a relationship-driven, commercially minded, Sales Representative to manage and develop existing accounts as well as identifying and acquiring new customers across our on-trade and off-trade divisions.
Representing The Modest Merchant in London & the wider UK market, you’ll be an ambassador for our modern wine portfolio, identifying and maximising growth opportunities, developing partnerships, whilst delivering exceptional service to our valued clients.
What we’re looking for
- Proven on-trade sales experience with existing active industry contacts
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in wine sales
- Strong commercial acumen, with a great understanding of profitability, margins and commercial fundamentals as well as the ability to review sales reports and analyse sales patterns
- Skill to connect and build collaborative, solid client relationships, identifying and addressing their needs and objectives
- Strong negotiation, active listening & communication skills
- Good IT proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, CRM systems, PowerPoint, Pipeline etc.)
- Attention to detail, prioritisation skills, and above all, a proactive attitude
- Collaborative mindset with a focus on achieving our team goals
- Enthusiasm for the wines you’re selling is a huge requirement so high levels of energy & passion are a must
- Ability to conduct tastings and engage customers in storytelling and our Modest Merchant brand values
- Ideally WSET Level 3 qualification
- Full clean driving licence

What You’ll Do
- Seek out and win new business through strategic, proactive prospecting.
- Manage and nurture a portfolio of existing customers, building strong relationships and spotting opportunities to grow them.
- Identify new areas of focus and take initiative to develop business within them.
- Share client / market insights to help inform the company’s planning and development
- Always strive to help us exceed our sales and growth targets.
- Support our end goal to land and grow key accounts.
- Keep our systems up to date with customer info, pricing, and forecasts.
- Set up tastings, handle sample requests, and get involved in promotional activity.
- Support the office team in managing orders, logistics, and stock queries as and when required.
