Winemaker and Assistant Winemaker (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

1.                    WINEMAKER - PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  •  You are responsible for and will supervise the production of wines allocated to you from grape to bottle.You will be responsible for an entire shift during the vintage period and post vintage if required.
  • You will be responsible for the production of all wines allocated to you that are scheduled for packaging.
  • You will liaise closely with the team at Oastbrook to ensure all allocated wines are prepared in the most efficient and timely manner so as not to cause bottling line down time or compromise wine quality.
  • As head of the Winemaking team, ensure all such wines are made to the highest possible standard in line with the company’s objective to achieve marketing success.
  • You will ensure all product liability requirements are met.
  •  Monitor winemaking trends and ensure that practices adopted are in line with industry best practice.
  • You will ensure the maintenance of cellar standards for the Oastbrook Winery.
  • You will assist in implementing training programs for staff to ensure that skills and technical competency are maintained at the highest standard.
  • You will ensure production costs are minimized and comparable to industry benchmarks.
  • You will help minimize areas of high cost and or waste.
  • Assist in the maintenance and continual improvement of EH&S standards for the company.
  • Assist in the maintenance and continual improvement of Safe Operating Procedures manual.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by the CEO.

 

 

2.                    STANDARDS

  • Ensure that all your direct reports are able to achieve the standards and quality levels set by the company.
  • Ensure that all communication is clear, timely and addressed to all concerned.
  • Ensure cellar procedures are always adhered to.
  • Ensure wines meet legal and company requirements.
  • Ensure cellar hygiene standards are met.
  • Through practical research, technical literature and industry exposure, maintain a grasp on present and future trends in winemaking techniques and styles.
  •    Ensure that you comply fully with the company policies including its policy on equality and diversity.

 

 

3.                    KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

 

  • Competent at all wine cellar tasks.
  • Ability to process wine to meet specifications
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the total winemaking process.
  • Have a sound knowledge of viticulture.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all company products.
  • Able to adjust the winemaking process so variables are catered for.                

 

 

 1.                   ASSISTANT WINEMAKER PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • You are responsible for and will supervise the production of wines allocated to 
  • Assist in supervising all day to day cellar operations, including harvest, bulk wine, barrels, bottling preparation, sanitation, and cellar organization and cleanliness.
  •  Provide winemaking technical support to the Winemaker and production staff.
  • Supervise grape receiving, crushing, pressing and wine production operations during harvest.
  •  Participate in wine tasting at all stages throughout the winemaking process and be responsible for conducting evaluation and recommendation of treatments.
  • Write work orders for all production related tasks from harvest to bottling.
  • Responsible for supervising, training, and mentoring all cellar employees during harvest, providing ongoing instruction and support as assigned.
  • Work as a team with Winemakers on all blends to ensure wine profiles are being adequately filled and bottling requirements are met on time.
  • Responsible for adhering EHS regulations.
  • Assist in educational tastings and tours of the facility, when needed.
  •  Contribute to the continuous improvement of the winemaking process and procedures.
  • Prepare work-orders, assist in data management, as well as conduct bulk and bottled wine inventories..
  •  Responsibility for the quality and execution of work performed, review and implementation of standards of care, safety, and operating procedures.
  • Safety training and management of compliance issues in the laboratory and cellar environment to provide a safe work place.
  •  Strategic and some budgetary planning for seasonal projects, harvest activities, staffing, ordering of supplies.
  • Maintain wine and job quality goals while managing for good productivity and cost effectiveness.
  •  Be available for weekend and evening winery events that require interaction with customers

  • Have the ability to identify faults in wine and the knowledge and experience to rectify them.
  •  Be computer literate.
  •   Have a good mechanical aptitude.
  •   Have the ability to communicate effectively to ensure that desired results are achieved.
  •  Experience running and operating a winery laboratory
  • Good numeracy skills
  •  Experience of record keeping

 

 

 

4.                   QUALIFICATIONS

 

  •  Degree in Oenology or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years experience in winemaking environment
  • Forklift Licence.
