The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced production manager to help deliver the next phase of development of one of the UK’s leading wine producers. It requires an individual who can manage a small team to realise our ambitious growth targets in the short term in addition to feeding into longer term expansion projects

This is a key role in supporting the operations director in the delivery of our vision to be the No.1 and most celebrated English winemaker.

Reporting to the Operations Director, the Head of Production will be based in Ashford, Kent and will be responsible for the production of a premium and super-premium product range. This includes the organisation of the bottling and post-bottling production of still, carbonated and traditional method sparkling wines plus a range of spirits with third party contractors and in-house. An ultimate focus on quality is required at the same time as identifying cost savings through operational and materials efficiencies.

The production manager will be a proven leader with high organisational and planning skills who will need to liaise with multiple departments and be comfortable communicating across the business. They will lead a team of eight and have three direct reports.

 

Key Responsibilities

 Production of super-premium, consistently high-quality products: To include liaising with QC manager to develop and implement further our QC standards of finished goods and packaging materials.

In-house production planning: Ensure production is planned to ensure that forecast sales volumes can be met through our own production facilities

NPD and existing product improvement: Assist with feasibility scoping and materials trials for new products or improvements to our existing range

Third party contractor management: Working closely with multiple contractors to ensure quality and consistency of production.

Supply chain management: Work with our existing systems in addition to implementing a new MRP/ERP system. Accurate stock and dry goods management across several sites.

Procurement: Lead purchasing and procurement decisions and conduct negotiations with suppliers to minimise CoGs. Accurately track costs of dry goods, packaging materials and agency staff to identify efficiencies and materials savings

Record keeping and warehouse management: Accurate and timely record keeping so that informed decisions can be made across the business.

Freight and distribution management: Ensure that the dispatch department is well organised and that efficient freight systems are in place.

Health and Safety management: Responsible for keeping and communicating updated risk assessments, conducting inductions for permanent and agency staff, leading a H&S focussed style of work in production

Machinery maintenance: Ensuring proactive and reactive machinery maintenance is conducted to minimise downtime

Team leadership: Lead, motivate and manage the warehousing and production teams to maximise their performance and retention

 

Experience

Extensive experience in production management, ideally within the super-premium drinks industry

Working to accreditation standards of BRC or SALSA

Supply chain management, ideally within the drinks or FMCG industry

Proven ability to manage teams effectively 

Devising and implementing production KPIs with communication of these upwards and downwards through the team

Working with, or ideally implementing MRP/ERP systems from a production perspective

Production planning to meet sales forecasts

Third party contractor management

 

Skills

First class leadership and management skills with excellent communication

Ability to think about production from an environmentally sustainable perspective

Strong negotiation skills with suppliers

Mechanical and/or pneumatic engineering understanding

Willingness and desire to focus on a H&S focussed workplace. IOSH qualification desirable

Ability to look ahead, anticipate change, and plan accordingly

Strong aptitude with MS packages, especially Excel
