Gusbourne is a premium English Sparkling Wine producer based in Appledore, Kent. The estate was established in 2004 and has continued to grow since then resulting in extensive plantings in Kent and Sussex. At Gusbourne we strive to produce the finest wines in the world using only our own estate-grown fruit ensuring that we have full control over quality, from the vine to the glass.  

 

Role Overview  

The team at our tasting room and visitor centre in Appledore has expanded, so, we are looking for a team supervisor. The Cellar Door Supervisor will be there to oversee all aspects of guest experiences, being on hand throughout the day for staff and guests alike.  

 

This varied and challenging role will see the right candidate assist in providing guests with an exceptional experience and enable the hosting team to achieve targets on bottle sales and wine membership sign-ups. Working days are Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 09:00 – 17:00 with occasional requirements for evening work or optional additional hours.

All activities will be carried out in accordance with Company Policy in relation to both health and safety and operational requirements.  

You will be required to liaise with all teams across the business at Gusbourne and external contacts as required.  

 

Main Duties  

  • Lead the team briefing to provide accurate information regarding guest numbers, guest requirements, event timing, and staffing. 

  • Ensure that tasting rooms and event areas are prepared for guests. 

  • Check vineyard vehicular movement and accessibility for guests. 

  • Welcome guests, check guest requirements, and direct them to the right place for their experience.  

  • Manage Cellar Door Staff to ensure efficient and timely team working and communication. 

  • Where appropriate, offer Vineyard Tours and Wine Flights to drop-in guests to maximise sales.   

  • Check that front-of-house areas are clean and comfortable for guest use. 

  • Be an authority on process, health & safety, using the till, and selling memberships and bottles.  

  • Keep yourself updated on all Gusbourne direct-to-consumer services and products. 

  • Manage the clear down and reset of tasting rooms and event areas. 

  • Facilitate the restocking of stock areas and fridges and the disposal of food waste, cardboard and bottles. 

  • Check that gates, doors, windows, and containers are locked and secured at the end of the day before handing over to Nest Management to lock and alarm the main building. 

 

People 

  • Work closely with the Team Manager, Customer Service Team and Nest Management Team to deliver the programme of events, and understand and relay daily events, guest numbers, and requirements. 

  • Liaison with the Chef Team to ensure that guest requirements are met and timings are communicated. 

Safety 

  • Responsible for the application of all health and safety and environmental practices within the defined area of responsibility.  

  • Ensuring the compliance of all team members and others working in the area of responsibility with the required systems and procedures.  

  • Thorough understanding of the procedures for dealing with accidents, emergencies, fires or other disasters in the defined area of responsibility including the electronic systems for recording of safety events.  

  • Continually review the current practices and procedures and recommend improvements.  

 

About you 

You will have experience in the retail or hospitality sectors, managing staff to always give the best they possibly can. You’ll be someone who keeps a keen eye on the rapidly developing English Wine scene in Kent and beyond. Capable of managing time and issues single-handedly whilst maintaining the utmost professionalism, you will have the practical experience to hit the ground running. The successful candidate will represent the Gusbourne brand and team and be a key member of the Nest staff. Accordingly, the Cellar Door Supervisor will be someone who can take responsibility for giving guests an exceptional experience at Gusbourne. 

 

Your skills and experience will include: 

  • Management experience in retail and/or hospitality environments 

  • Good wine knowledge, ideally WSET Level 2 or above, and enthusiasm for wine. 

  • Ability to deliver exceptional customer service. 

  • Exceptional time management. 

  • Ability to translate management objectives to staff on a day-to-day level. 

  • Able to work independently using your own initiative. 

  • Friendly, helpful, and confident.
