Assistant Winemaker - Halfpenny Green Wine Estate
Job Description
The successful applicant will have the chance to work with an award winning 40 year old vineyard and state of the art contract winery with many years of experience dealing with English and Welsh grapes from upwards of 50 vineyards.
The main role will be assisting the Winery Manager in preparing batches of wine prior to bottling, as well as performing quality control tasks around the processes. Assisting with developing weekly activity plans that lead into daily tasks, in conjunction with the Assistant Winery Manager and other department heads. Having an input into blending sessions, ensuring the upkeep of housekeeping in designated areas are all a key part of this role. Training will be given to the successful applicant.
Key Accountability 1: Wine Quality
Duty statement:
-Monitor tanks and wine conditions on a weekly basis.
-QC monitoring for bottling and disgorging processes.
-Keep movement and additions records up to date digitally.
-Ensuring all wine analysis is completed prior to bottling.
-To evaluate oxygen management reports regularly and act on issues quickly
-Have an input within blending sessions and discussions regarding the Halfpenny Green brand
-To follow SOPs and ensure wine quality is maintained during movements
-Keep improving hygiene practises within the tank room
-Constantly evaluate issues/successes with the Winery Manager
Key Accountability 2: Tank Room Logistics
Duty statement:
-To assist the Winery Manager in the creation and action of the weekly plans.
-Working to an ongoing bottling/production plan alongside the Assistant Winery Manager.
-Maintain machinery and equipment within the tank room.
-Maintain excellent communication processes with other teams and departments.
Key Accountability 3: Pre bottling SALSA Documentation
Duty statement:
-Ensure housekeeping standards are met and maintained at all times within the tank room.
-Keeping the tank room clean and tidy on a daily/weekly basis.
-Keeping the laboratory clean and tidy on a daily/weekly basis.
-Sign off for goods in
-Attend annual review meetings
-Ensure paperwork is filled out and filed regularly
Desired Skills include:
- Degree in Viticulture & Oenology (but not essential)
- Experience with both the practical and technical aspects of the winemaking process
- Strong problem solving skills and good attention to detail
- Physically fit
- Flexibility across the year especially during harvest
- The ability to use computers and IT comfortably
