A charmingly casual yet sophisticated restaurant, Petersham Nurseries Café is set within a glasshouse brimming with fragrant bougainvillea and jasmine, draped with Indian blinds and decorated with antique furniture, mirrors and paintings. Respecting the Slow Food philosophy, the restaurant serves seasonal produce led dishes alongside an ever-evolving wine list of hand-picked fine Italian wines.

 

 

Passionate about wine and keen to work in a creative, energetic, beautiful environment? Our Head Sommelier Mattia Scarpazza, is looking for a full time assistant to work alongside him and be trained as a sommelier.

 

 

This is an incredible opportunity for someone who has a good basic starting knowledge of wine and wants to begin a career as a sommelier. The ideal candidate should be truly passionate about wine and has a desire to learn more.

 

 

Petersham Nurseries outsources wines from some of the leading suppliers in the country as well as importing directly from Italy. You will be working closely and training alongside our expert Head Sommelier, as well as our sister business Petersham Cellar: an online wine merchant created in order to promote an ever-evolving selection of hand-picked fine Italian wines to anyone interested in discovering and experiencing these delicious wines and the culture surrounding them.

 

 

We are offering the opportunity to work in an exciting environment where you can discover wines from lesser known regions as well as be part of a growing team. We have a strong track record of retaining team members and helping them to grow within our business by offering career progression and subsidised training.

 

 

This is a full time role starting immediately. Please note Petersham Nurseries Café is predominately a lunchtime restaurant with only a handful of candlelit supper clubs throughout the year.

 

 

The ideal candidate will have the following:

 

•             Previous restaurant/ service experience;

•             Passion and enthusiasm to learn;

•             A basic understanding of the wine making process and knowledge of Italian wines/ regions;

•             Ideally minimum WSET level 1/2 or equivalent, though not necessarily required (We can provide access to undertake this training)

•             Ability to maintain the highest levels of customer service, demonstrating exceptional knowledge of the menu/ wine list and ensuring that the service you provide results in increased sales and repeat business.

•             Good grasp of English language;

•             Thrive working alongside a passionate team;

•             Able to troubleshoot and solve problems on the ground;

 

Some of your responsibilities will include:

•             Daily opening, closing and cashing up responsibilities;

•             Stock/ inventory management;

•             Collect and carry stock (a driving license is desirable);

•             Create and update the wine list in coordination with Head Sommelier;

•             Ensure wines are served at the right temperature and within the proper glassware;

•             Recommend food and wine pairings;

•             Store open bottles properly to maintain strong taste;

•             Manage wine cellar and ensure its fully-stocked;

•             Train wait staff on available wines;

•             Support Head Sommelier organise wine tasting days or wine of the month events.
