General Assistant
(Wine Jobs:
Wine Retail & Sommelier)
Full Time
Near Guildford, Surrey,
England
Taurus Wines is a wine merchant based in the beautiful Surrey Hills, about 5 miles south of Guildford. This expanding and dynamic business is recruiting staff to serve in its new flagship store, a 2500 sq ft Surrey barn conversion which will become a ‘destination’ wine shop and experience. The company is also expanding into a second location, another converted barn, which is part of a ‘foodie heaven’ just outside Guildford. The successful candidate will work across both locations as required, although the role will be based at the flagship store.
This full-time General Assistant role is an ideal first job for a recent graduate looking to enter the wine trade. The successful candidate will see all aspects of what goes into running a thriving independent wine shop, from back office ordering and admin to front-of-house customer interaction and being out on the road delivering to our private, on-trade and wholesale clients.
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or similar, with the potential to use this first job as the launch pad for a career in the wine trade. During the first few months in the position the job will include learning the ropes and helping Taurus Wines move to its new flagship store. In Autumn 2018 another new shop will open, so we’re looking for a real ‘roll your sleeves up’ attitude and someone who will be able to help with the move.
After the initial store set ups, the day to day role will include, but not be limited to, delivering wine to customers around the Surrey Hills, stock taking, creating engaging displays in the store, turning around glasses after hire, liaising with our second store, helping out at events and tastings, including working in our vintage bar van and keeping the store tidy and presentable.
The successful candidate will be physically fit and able to safely lift up to 15kg (the average weight of a case of wine), and be keen to get stuck into any projects that crop up throughout the store. A full, clean driving licence is a must, as is a high level of personal presentation and excellent communication skills.
At Taurus Wines we strongly believe in education and all our staff are offered the chance to study for the WSET Levels 1-3 and the Diploma, as well as practical courses such as fork-lift truck driving and health and safety/first aid courses.
Salary is competitive plus the package includes a discretionary store bonus, staff discount, contributory pension and cycle to work scheme.
Normal hours will be a 45 hour week between 9am-7pm, seven days a week in a shift pattern.
