About the role
This role is a nexus point – just about everything that happens in the business will touch a business analyst at some point, because everything we do is driven by data. A Business Analyst is highly technical, using database mining techniques (primarily SQL) to extract raw data, and then analysing that data to detect trends, find opportunities, answer questions, and propose solutions.
Balancing several projects and several internal customers at the same time will be typical, as well as batting away in incessant stream of ad-hoc data requests. It’s demanding, but it’s incredibly satisfying for the right sort of person.
About you
You have an enquiring mind, you’re smart, and you like to solve problems. You have the technical skill to query a database using SQL, and you have the commercial acumen to understand the significance of the trends that you’re identifying so that you can find the root cause of the problem or the seed of an opportunity.
You have a working toolkit of statistical modelling and analytical techniques, and you can quickly learn new things to add to that toolset. You can say three interesting (interesting to you, anyway) things about the normal distribution, you know how to determine statistical significance, and you have a few methods up your sleeve for predicting the future.
You are careful and precise. You understand that caveats are a necessary evil and you will feel comfortable presenting your view on the data as well as the raw stats, even if there are caveats and assumptions abound. You learn quickly; whether it’s picking up a bit of javascript so that you can automate a Google Sheet, getting to grips with the stock database so that you can produce a suite of stock holding reports, or brushing up on the fundamentals of time series forecasting so that you can support finance.
