New Hall Vineyards, founded in 1969 is one of England’s oldest vineyards covering 120 acres and specialises in a range of fresh, aromatic still white, red and rose wines including small batches of traditional method sparkling wine from a wide selection of grape varieties. New Hall also offers contract winemaking services for several growers in the Essex and Suffolk counties processing over 250 tonnes in total.

The HCH will be supervised by the Senior Winemaking team throughout the duration of their time at New Hall Vineyards. The role will be extremely practical and hands-on, completing a wide range of duties as part of a team or independently while under supervision. The successful candidate will support and become a key member of the winemaking team during a critical, busy period.

 

Key Purpose

We are looking for cellar hands for this 2024 harvest. You will be working under the guidance  of our passionate winemaking team with a large range of experience working overseas.

This is a very exciting opportunity, as New Hall Wine Estate host some of the oldest vines in the UK dating back to the early 1970’s. Working with 18 different varieties gives cellar hands a broad experience. 

Pervious Harvest experience is considered favourable but not essential. Training will be provided where needed.

This is a temporary seasonal position; you will be paid by the hour over a 6–10-week period starting week commencing late August. There is potential for a Harvest cellar hand to be recruit full time after harvest.

Responsibilities – Including but not limited to

·         Pre harvest deep cleaning and equipment preparation.

·         Berry sampling and analysis.

·         Basic Lab analysis.

·         Fruit receival (loading/emptying presses, sanitation of processing equipment).

·         Pumps and lines set up, cleaning and sanitation.

·         Tank cleaning and sanitation.

·         Racking & transfers

·         Enrichment and de-acidification operations.

·         Inoculations.

·         Additions.

·         Pump overs/punch downs.

 

What does a successful applicant look like?

·         Cellar hands must be physically fit able to lift 25Kg.

·         Previous experience in winery setting ideal,  but not necessary.

·         Harvest hours are long. Cellar hands will be expected to stand and work in cold/wet conditions.

·         Comfortable working in enclosed spaces.

·         Able to use a forklift or is prepared to be trained/tested on them before harvest.

·         Full rights to work in the UK.

·         Driving licence and own transport desirable due to location of the vineyard.

·         Accommodation can be provided but is limited and could be shared with other cellar hands

 

Personal characteristics

·         Keen to learn about how wine is made at New Hall Wine Estate.

·         High attention to detail. For example: cleanliness and accuracy with additions is key in the winery.

·         Able to adapt and overcome problems in the winery, but to ask for senior assistance when needed.

·         Self-motivated. The ability to work alone and as part of a team is essential.

·         Individuals to abide to health safety guidelines that are provided at New Hall wine estate.

·         Flexible approach to both working hours and be willing to work weekends, evenings and shifts.

·         Good communication with members of team. Relaying information when needed.
